New Delhi, May 24: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has claimed that a significant announcement regarding Iran could be made within hours. He made this statement in response to a question during a press conference in Delhi.
According to Rubio, progress has been made in U.S.-Iran negotiations, and a major announcement is likely; however, President Donald Trump will be the one to provide details. During a joint press conference with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Rubio emphasized that the U.S. does not want Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. Ongoing discussions are crucial, and Tehran must agree to terms.
Rubio also condemned Iran’s threats to target ships in the Strait of Hormuz, labeling them a violation of international law. He stated, “The Strait of Hormuz does not belong to any one country. It is an international maritime route. Iran is threatening to harm commercial vessels passing through.” He warned that normalizing such behavior would set a dangerous precedent for the future.
Meanwhile, a report from Reuters cited an Iranian official stating that contrary to claims, Iran is not prepared to hand over enriched uranium. The official noted that Iran’s nuclear program is not part of the initial agreement with the U.S.
He mentioned that further discussions on a final agreement regarding the nuclear issue will take place, indicating that it is not included in the current deal. In fact, The New York Times reported, citing U.S. officials, that Iran had agreed to relinquish uranium.
Additionally, Axios reported on a proposed 60-day ceasefire deal, which includes Iran’s commitment not to develop nuclear weapons. The draft also discusses halting the uranium program and removing enriched uranium from the country.
