Ahmedabad, March 17: Gujarat police have seized foreign liquor valued at over ₹1 crore. Officials reported on Tuesday that the state’s crime prevention branch (PCB) confiscated a significant shipment of foreign alcohol worth ₹1.08 crore during a targeted operation in Ahmedabad. A driver was also arrested in connection with the case.
The operation took place late Monday night near the Sutar Factory Bridge in the Naroda area of the city. According to police, the PCB team received a tip-off about a container coming from Haryana, passing through Rajasthan, and heading towards Ahmedabad. They suspected it would cross the Naroda Ring Road near the bridge, prompting them to begin surveillance.
When the container arrived, officers stopped it for inspection. The driver, Mangiram Jat, a resident of Sadpura village in Rajasthan, was asked to present the documents for the cargo. He provided a document claiming the shipment contained bicycles. However, officials suspected the document was fake. Upon opening the container, they discovered it was filled with foreign liquor.
The container was taken to the Naroda police station, and a case was registered against the driver under the Gujarat Prohibition Act. Police reported that approximately 23,232 bottles, packed in 892 boxes, were recovered, with an estimated value of ₹1,08,11,184. Authorities also seized the driver’s mobile phone, ₹1,450 in cash, and a container valued at around ₹20 lakh.
An official stated that this operation is part of ongoing efforts by the city police to curb illegal alcohol trade in the state. The PCB is also investigating the involvement of others in this smuggling operation.
Since the formation of Gujarat, a prohibition on alcohol has been in place. However, authorities have regularly seized large quantities of liquor in recent years. Government data presented in the state assembly over the past two years indicates that more than ₹38.89 crore worth of alcohol has been confiscated at checkpoints along the borders with Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Over 1,000 individuals have been arrested in connection with these seizures.
Significant recoveries have also occurred in previous operations in Ahmedabad and surrounding areas. In a recent police operation in the Narol area, more than 10,749 bottles of foreign liquor, hidden under a pile of helmets in a truck, were seized, with an estimated value exceeding ₹63 lakh.
