Mumbai, May 8: The Maharashtra government is taking a serious stance against the spread of misinformation on social media. Incidents of defamation without evidence have been on the rise in the state, causing distress among various community groups.
To address this issue, the state government has decided to form a committee to explore potential amendments to existing laws or the introduction of new legal frameworks. According to an official order, this committee will be chaired by the Director General of Police of Maharashtra.
The committee will review legal provisions related to defamation, fake posts, and unsubstantiated allegations made through social media. It will also assess whether amendments to current laws or the introduction of new provisions are necessary.
Additionally, the government has tasked the committee with conducting a legal and technical examination of the possibilities for creating new laws or amending existing ones at the state level. The committee will also provide recommendations to strengthen laws aimed at effectively controlling the misuse of social media.
