Maha Vikas Aghadi Yet to Decide on Rajya Sabha Seat: Aditya Thackeray

Mumbai, March 3: Shiv Sena UBT leader and former minister Aditya Thackeray stated on Tuesday that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has not yet made a decision regarding the Rajya Sabha seat. He assured that a decision will be made soon.

He mentioned that NCP SP leaders Supriya Sule and Jayant Patil met with Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray, reiterating that discussions are still ongoing.

In a post on X, Aditya Thackeray said, “Supriya Sule and Jayant Patil met with Uddhav Thackeray today at Matoshree. No decision has been made on the Rajya Sabha seat yet, but it will happen soon. All MVA partners will come together to discuss the seat and political alignment.”

It is noteworthy that the deadline for filing no-action papers is March 5, with voting scheduled for March 16.

A meeting between Uddhav Thackeray and NCP SP is crucial, especially since the Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray, has staked its claim on the Rajya Sabha seat. The Congress party has also expressed its interest, while NCP SP chief Sharad Pawar has not claimed the seat. However, Sule recently stated that many MVA leaders want senior Pawar to be the MVA candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat.

Earlier, Aditya Thackeray mentioned on Monday that there are no obstacles in the discussions for the Rajya Sabha elections, as all parties associated with the Maha Vikas Aghadi are in talks with each other.

He stated on X, “We have staked our claim for the upcoming Rajya Sabha seat, as per the numbers and the rotation policy set for the MVA, Shiv Sena UBT should contest for this seat. This aligns with all the political stances we have taken as part of the INDIA alliance.”

Similarly, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Varun Sardesai clarified the party’s position last Friday, stating that this seat rightfully belongs to Uddhav Thackeray’s group.

Sharad Pawar has not yet made any public or official statement regarding his candidacy, which has led the Congress party to maintain its claim on the seat, complicating the alliance’s seat-sharing formula.

The ruling Maha Yuti has 233 members, with the BJP holding 131, Shiv Sena 57, NCP 40, and the potential to win six seats with support from nine smaller parties and independent candidates.

In contrast, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi has 46 members, with Shiv Sena (UBT) having 20, Congress 16, and NCP (SP) 10, thus they can only win one seat.
