Mumbai, March 15: Political rhetoric is intensifying in the country as upcoming elections approach. In this context, Congress leader and former Rajya Sabha member Hussein Dalwai has raised serious questions about the impartiality of the Election Commission of India (ECI). He accused the commission of operating under the influence of the central government, claiming that its independence has been compromised.
In a recent conversation, Dalwai indicated that an election schedule could soon be announced for states where elections are due. However, he asserted that the elections, particularly in Assam, will not be fair.
Dalwai stated, “The Election Commission has become a puppet of the central government. Its significance has diminished. Just look at how elections will be conducted in Assam. It won’t be an election; it will be election fraud.”
He further alleged that voters have been removed from the voter list through the SIR process, which he described as completely unconstitutional. “People now believe that the Election Commission has become a puppet,” he added.
Dalwai warned that not only in Assam but also in other states, attempts will be made to influence elections. “They will try to manipulate elections everywhere. This is quite clear. In West Bengal, they have already started working in this direction,” he claimed.
Questioning the functioning of the Election Commission, Dalwai remarked, “When the government says ‘stand up,’ the commission stands. When it says ‘sit down,’ it sits. This way, the significance of the Election Commission has vanished.”
During the discussion, Dalwai also responded to a recent statement by Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar, emphasizing the importance of maintaining dialogue with neighboring countries.
He stated, “They are our neighboring countries, and we should talk to them. We should also engage with Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Somewhere, it is essential to create a collaborative framework or union. Problems can only be resolved through dialogue.”
Dalwai also mentioned that it is not appropriate to continuously criticize a country solely because it is a Muslim nation.
Additionally, he commented on the issues surrounding ‘Hindu’ and ‘Sanatan Dharma.’ Dalwai said, “Not every individual is obliged to associate themselves with the term ‘Hindu.’ Those who frequently talk about ‘Hindu-Hindu’ often refer to Sanatan Dharma. Since Sanatan Dharma has historically recognized caste discrimination, it is natural that some people will oppose it.”
