Kerala Elections: LDF Candidates List Nearly Finalized, UDF Still Negotiating Seats

Thiruvananthapuram, March 15: The Election Commission announced the date for the Kerala elections on Sunday. Voting will take place on April 9. A significant disparity in preparations is evident among the three major political alliances in the state.

The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) appears to be ahead in finalizing candidates and seat allocations compared to its rivals. The LDF, comprising ten parties, has nearly finalized its candidates after internal meetings involving the CPI(M) and CPI, with consensus on the list already reached.

According to party sources, discussions with smaller allied parties are in the final stages, and a nearly finalized list of candidates may be released soon.

The LDF is entering this election from a position of strength. In the 2021 assembly elections, the LDF secured 99 seats in the 140-member assembly, while the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), led by Congress, managed only 41 seats.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) could not retain its sole seat won in 2016.

The voting percentages from the last election also reflect the LDF’s advantage: LDF received 45.43%, UDF garnered 39.47%, and BJP-NDA received 12.41%.

On the other hand, the eight-party UDF has yet to reach consensus on several critical issues. Congress, leading the alliance, has not finalized its list of candidates.

Additionally, negotiations regarding seat sharing with allies like the Indian Union Muslim League and Kerala Congress (Joseph) are ongoing. Typically, Congress contests around 90 seats, with the remaining distributed among its allies, which include IUML, PJ Joseph, and Anup Jacob’s faction of Kerala Congress, Revolutionary Socialist Party, Communist Marxist Party, Revolutionary Marxist Party, and the party led by MLA Mani C. Kappen.

Historically, seat distribution has always been a sensitive issue within the UDF, and this time is no exception.

Conversely, the BJP-led NDA is not expected to face significant challenges in seat distribution. As the leading party in the alliance, the BJP will make most of the decisions regarding seats. Allies like the Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) and Sabu M. Jacob’s party, Twenty20, which have influence in certain seats in Ernakulam district, will also play a role.

As the electoral contest is set to formally begin, it will be crucial to see how quickly each alliance resolves its internal issues, as this will likely determine the initial momentum of their campaign.
