Prayagraj, 3 January: The grand Magh Mela 2026 commenced in Prayagraj on Friday. Devotees started arriving early morning at the Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the invisible Saraswati rivers meet, taking holy dips to seek blessings and spiritual merit. A large crowd was seen in the mela area on the very first day. The administration remained fully alert throughout the event.
The Magh Mela will continue from 3 January until Maha Shivaratri on 15 February 2026. Several major bathing occasions and religious events are scheduled during this period. The district administration and police department had made extensive preparations for the first bathing festival, Paush Purnima, which were clearly evident on the ground.
The security arrangements for the mela are described as unprecedented. Over 400 AI-enabled CCTV cameras have been installed across the mela area, providing 24-hour surveillance of all activities. In addition, drones are continuously monitoring crowd movement and traffic. Considering water safety, NDRF and SDRF divers have been deployed at the Sangam and nearby ghats. Anti-Terrorism Squad, Bomb Disposal Squad, and other security agencies are also stationed to prevent any untoward incidents. The mela area has been divided into multiple sectors for police deployment to respond promptly to any emergency.
Additional Police Commissioner Ajay Pal Sharma stated that special arrangements have been made for security and traffic management during the first major bathing festival of Magh Mela 2026. He explained that with the mela’s opening bathing event underway, monitoring is being done using drones, AI-enabled cameras, and AI-based systems. Traffic and security teams are present on the ground to ensure smooth operations.
He further added that all police personnel underwent over a month of special training. This included crowd management, disaster management, and devotee safety training, which was completed well in advance. Police teams are deployed everywhere to ensure the safety of the devotees, who are bathing and returning smoothly.
