Chennai: The Madras High Court on Tuesday set aside the single judge’s order directing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant a censor certificate to actor Vijay’s film ‘Jana Nayagan’. The decision came after the CBFC filed a petition challenging the earlier order, raising the possibility of a delay in the film’s release.
The single judge had previously dismissed the CBFC’s instruction to send the film for review by the revising committee and ordered immediate certification. However, the two-judge bench of the Madras High Court ruled that the single judge should have allowed the CBFC sufficient time to respond, thereby cancelling the earlier directive.
As per the current ruling, ‘Jana Nayagan’ cannot be released in cinemas until the CBFC officially certifies the film. Until now, the film has not received its censor certificate.
The film was scheduled for release on January 9, ahead of the Pongal festival. However, days before the release, the CBFC informed the production house, KVN Productions, that the film was referred to the revising committee following a complaint. Subsequently, the makers approached the Madras High Court, which initially granted relief by directing the CBFC to issue a UA certificate after suggested modifications.
CBFC then appealed against this order, leading the two-judge bench to stay the single judge’s directive to grant the certificate. KVN Productions also approached the Supreme Court, which on January 15 dismissed the plea and asked the makers to seek remedy from the Madras High Court.
This ongoing legal tussle has put the film’s release on hold, pending clearance from the censor board.
