Madhya Pradesh Governor Urges Screening for Sickle Cell Disease in Schools

Bhopal, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : The Governor of Madhya Pradesh, Mangubhai Patel, has emphasized the importance of screening children for sickle cell disease in schools. This directive comes as part of the ongoing efforts to address the health needs of the state’s population, which has seen 1.34 crore individuals screened for the condition.

During a review meeting on the “National Sickle Cell Elimination Mission 2047” and the “National Tuberculosis Elimination Program,” Patel instructed officials to prioritize screening initiatives at primary schools and anganwadi centers. He stressed the need for early identification of children affected by this genetic disorder and those carrying the sickle cell trait, ensuring they receive appropriate counseling and follow-up care.

Patel remarked that children represent the future of the nation, highlighting that their health and development should be a primary concern. He urged for a focus on achieving positive health outcomes through these initiatives.

The Governor also called for greater involvement from public representatives in the ongoing campaigns against sickle cell disease and tuberculosis. He suggested that officials collaborate with local MPs and MLAs to organize health camps in their constituencies, securing necessary resources and financial support.

Moreover, Patel emphasized the importance of engaging youth in awareness campaigns. He encouraged officials to reach out to university and college students, inviting them to become “Sickle Friends” to promote understanding and support within the community.

Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, who attended the meeting, reported that 92 percent of those screened in the state have received genetic status cards. He also noted the establishment of 4,825 “Sickle Friends” as part of the awareness campaign, with efforts underway to increase this number.

Shukla highlighted that the recovery rate for tuberculosis in Madhya Pradesh has reached 89 percent, with a corresponding decrease in mortality rates. The commitment to improving health outcomes in the state remains strong as officials work to combat these significant health challenges.
