New Delhi, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : India has made a significant move to support Botswana’s public health system by sending 10 tons of antiretroviral drugs aimed at treating HIV/AIDS. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar announced this initiative on social media, emphasizing India’s commitment to strengthen health cooperation with partners in the Global South.
Jaishankar stated, “Today, we dispatched 10 tons of antiretroviral drugs to support Botswana’s public health system for HIV/AIDS treatment. This demonstrates our commitment to enhancing health collaboration with our partners in the Global South.”
According to the Indian High Commission in Gaborone, the bilateral ties between India and Botswana have remained close and friendly, with mutual trust growing over the years.
In November, President Droupadi Murmu made a historic state visit to Botswana, marking the first presidential-level visit from India to the country. This visit initiated a new chapter in wildlife conservation collaboration, during which Botswana gifted India eight cheetahs under the “Project Cheetah” initiative. This symbolic donation took place during a visit to the Mokolodi Nature Reserve, where both leaders observed the release of cheetahs brought from the Ghanzi region.
The President’s Secretariat noted that this initiative symbolizes the start of a new chapter in India-Botswana cooperation in wildlife conservation. During her visit, President Mokgweetsi Masisi highlighted that India, known as the “mother of democracy,” has been a strong source of inspiration and support for Botswana’s development journey. He praised President Murmu’s active role in promoting education, gender equality, and the upliftment of marginalized communities.
Masisi pointed out that this was the first state visit by any country since he took office last year, underscoring the importance of bilateral relations with India.
In extensive face-to-face meetings and delegation-level discussions, both leaders agreed to enhance cooperation in key sectors such as trade and investment, agriculture, renewable energy, health, education, skill development, defense, and digital technology.
