Washington, March 16: French President Emmanuel Macron has reached out to Iranian President Masoud Pajeshkian, urging him to cease Iran’s unacceptable attacks on Middle Eastern countries. Macron shared this information on the social media platform X.
Following their conversation, Macron stated on X, “I just spoke with the President of Iran. I told him to immediately stop the attacks that are unacceptable. Iran is attacking countries in the region, whether directly or indirectly, including Lebanon and Iraq. I reminded him that France is fully committed to defending its interests, its regional partners, and freedom of navigation, and it is unacceptable for our country to be targeted.”
He added, “The unchecked escalation we are witnessing is pushing the entire region into chaos, which will have significant consequences today and in the years to come. The people of Iran, like those in the entire region, are paying the price for this. Only a new political and secure framework can ensure peace and security for all. Such a framework must guarantee that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons, while also addressing the threats posed by its ballistic missile program and destabilizing activities worldwide. Freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz must be restored as soon as possible.”
In his appeal, Macron also urged the Iranian president to allow the safe return of French citizens Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who have been detained in Iran. Their ordeal has lasted too long, as both were arrested during a visit to Iran in May 2022.
Macron’s remarks come after Paris decided to significantly increase its military presence in the region. Earlier this week, he announced that France is deploying eight frigates, two amphibious helicopter carriers, and the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle in the Eastern Mediterranean and Red Sea to establish a defensive position to support partners and maintain freedom of navigation.
Previously, the U.S. President expressed hope that allied nations, including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, would send warships to help secure shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz.
