Nagoya, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu made headlines at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya by securing her first silver medal. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as it ends a 28-year drought for India in weightlifting at the Asian Games, with the last medal won in 1998. Competing in the 49-kilogram category, Chanu lifted a total of 198 kilograms to clinch the silver.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya extended their congratulations to Chanu for her remarkable accomplishment. Modi expressed his pride on social media, stating, “A special silver for Mirabai Chanu. Congratulations on winning a medal in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting event. Her determination and relentless efforts will continue to inspire the nation. India is proud of her. Best wishes for her future endeavors.”
In addition to Chanu, the PMO also commended the women’s skeet team, who earned a bronze medal, including Parinaz Dhaliwal, Maheshwari Chauhan, and Raiza Dhillon.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised Chanu’s performance, highlighting her dedication and hard work. He wrote, “Congratulations to Mirabai Chanu for winning the silver medal in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting event at the Asian Games 2026. Sports Minister Mandaviya also celebrated Chanu’s historic win, noting, “Congratulations to Mirabai Chanu for winning a historic silver at the Asian Games 2026 in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting event. This is her first Asian Games medal, and it brings India another medal after 28 years. The entire country is proud of you.”
Chanu’s journey at the Asian Games has been a challenging one. In 2014, she finished in ninth place, and she was unable to compete in the 2018 Games due to injury. At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, she narrowly missed a medal, finishing in fourth place. However, she has previously won medals at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and World Championships, including a gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
