(Kiran News) – Washington, 16 August. A crucial summit aimed at ending the Ukraine war was held in Alaska on Friday between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, no final agreement was reached between the two leaders. Both leaders described the meeting as very fruitful. Putin invited Trump for the next round of talks in Moscow, to which Trump agreed. The eyes of the world, including Ukraine, were on this high-level meeting.

According to The Moscow Times, Russian President Putin and US President Trump held a closed-door meeting at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Alaska. Trump was joined by Marco Rubio, Witkoff, while Putin was accompanied by Sergey Lavrov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and economic advisor Kirill Dmitriev.

Earlier, Russian President Putin received a warm welcome upon arriving in Alaska for this much-anticipated meeting. Trump had already reached the venue, and after Putin’s arrival, the two leaders shook hands and left for the summit in the same car.

Both leaders traveled to Alaska—Trump from Washington and Putin from Moscow. The summit, held against the backdrop of a “quest for peace,” focused centrally on ending the Russia-Ukraine war, which has lasted for more than three years. This was the first face-to-face meeting between the two top leaders since 2019. After nearly two hours and forty-five minutes of discussion, both leaders stated that progress had been made towards ending the war in Ukraine, but they had not reached a historic peace agreement.

In a joint press conference, Trump said that their meeting was very useful and that consensus was reached on many issues. However, he admitted that some major obstacles still need to be resolved, although progress was made. Trump emphasized that no agreement will be considered valid until it is finalized.

Trump also said he would share the details of the discussions with Ukrainian President Zelensky and also consult with NATO. The US President expressed hope that another meeting will be held soon on this matter.

During this, Russian President Putin invited Trump to visit Russia for the next meeting, saying “next time in Moscow.” Trump responded positively, saying he could see it happening. Putin reiterated that Ukraine’s geographical position is a fundamental threat to his country’s security. He stated that only by addressing all the primary causes can a permanent and long-term agreement be reached on this issue. Putin welcomed Trump’s statement about ensuring Ukraine’s security and expressed hope that the points discussed today would help achieve peace.

However, during the 12-minute press conference, neither leader gave details of the discussions, and both refused to answer journalists’ questions.

It is noteworthy that in the conflict with Ukraine, Russia demands that Ukraine withdraw its army from Donbas and Kherson, abandon its NATO membership ambitions, limit its military, and stop receiving Western military aid. On the other hand, Ukraine maintains it will not give up its land. President Zelensky has repeatedly stated that no peace agreement will succeed without Ukraine’s involvement.
