Kannur, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : A long-sought murder suspect has been apprehended by police in Kannur, Kerala, after evading capture for 14 years. The special investigation team of Kannur City Police arrested C. Anand in the Kangayampalayam area of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He is the main accused in the 2012 murder of Manikandan, a resident of Kakkampalam.
The incident occurred on the evening of December 2, 2012, around 7:15 PM, near the Ismail Quarters in the Azhikode Panchayat. Authorities allege that Manikandan was attacked with sticks, resulting in severe head injuries that ultimately led to his death.
Anand was initially arrested by the Valapattanam police but managed to flee after being granted bail. Following his escape, police conducted extensive searches but were unable to locate him. Eventually, the court declared him a proclaimed offender.
Investigations revealed that Anand avoided using mobile phones and frequently changed his location across various areas in Tamil Nadu, complicating efforts to track him down. Additionally, he is also implicated in another murder case registered in 2021 at the Sulur police station in Tamil Nadu.
The breakthrough came when the special investigation team received intelligence indicating that Anand occasionally visited a residence in Kangayampalayam. Following this tip, police began discreetly monitoring his activities.
After confirming his identity and location through continuous surveillance, the special investigation team successfully arrested him in Kangayampalayam. This operation was executed under “Operation Grip,” overseen by DIG K. Karthik and Kannur City Police Commissioner Vijay Bharat Reddy.
The Narcotics Cell’s ACP V.V. Manoj and Kannur Town ACP Asad led the special investigation team, which had been diligently searching for the suspect for several months. Police noted that Anand’s constant movement and avoidance of mobile phone usage allowed him to remain elusive for many years. Ultimately, through persistent intelligence gathering and covert monitoring, law enforcement was able to bring him to justice.
