Lonavala Chikki Receives GI Tag, Elevating the Tourist Destinations Prestige

Mumbai, July 18: Lonavala, a prominent tourist destination nestled in the lush Sahyadri mountains, has achieved a significant milestone. The world-famous Lonavala Chikki has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This recognition provides official status to Lonavala’s traditional chikki, ensuring the preservation of this historical food product’s uniqueness. It is expected to boost local businesses, artisans, and the tourism industry.

Every visitor to Lonavala considers purchasing its renowned chikki an essential part of their trip. Alongside attractions like Bhushi Dam, Tiger Point, Rajmachi Point, Lohagad and Visapur forts, and the ancient Karla and Bhaja caves, Lonavala Chikki has become a distinctive identity of this tourist town. With the GI tag, its brand value and credibility are likely to increase further.

The history of Lonavala Chikki is believed to be linked to the British colonial era. During the construction of the Mumbai-Pune railway line, this nutritious food made from jaggery and peanuts was created for laborers. Gradually, its taste became popular, and over time, it gained recognition across the country. Today, Lonavala Chikki is known not just in India but also abroad.

Chikki businessman Ankit Parekh expressed his joy over this achievement, stating that the GI tag provides Lonavala Chikki with a strong identity and a larger platform. This recognition will facilitate business expansion both in India and internationally. It will not only enhance trade but also elevate the name of Lonavala Chikki on a global scale. He mentioned that his national chikki business has been running for nearly 100 years. The GI tag will give their traditional craftsmanship and age-old skills a new identity, thereby promoting local industry.

Ankit Parekh noted that his father, Abhay Kumar Parekh, worked tirelessly for four years to secure the GI tag. The results of this relentless effort are now evident.
