Los Angeles, March 30: Hollywood star Lisa Kudrow is fondly remembered for her role as Phoebe Buffay. However, few know that she initially had reservations about the very show that skyrocketed her to fame. When Kudrow was cast in “Friends,” she was already working on another series, “Mad About You,” and felt uncertain about leaving it behind.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Kudrow expressed, “I take great pride in my role on ‘Mad About You.’ My character was a waitress. Although it was a small role, it was significant for my career. So, when I received the offer for ‘Friends,’ I was conflicted. I was afraid of whether the new show would succeed, as many good shows don’t last long in the TV industry.”
She continued, “Even when the pilot episode of ‘Friends’ was filmed, I wasn’t entirely convinced it would be a hit. I thought it was a good show, but its success wasn’t guaranteed. I wanted to keep my old show ‘Mad About You’ as a safety net, in case ‘Friends’ didn’t last.”
Kudrow admitted, “I didn’t want to take any risks. I felt that if ‘Friends’ was canceled after a few episodes, I should have an option like ‘Mad About You.’ That’s why I tried to maintain my role on the older show.”
When “Friends” premiered in 1994, it made history. Alongside Kudrow, the cast included Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and the late Matthew Perry. The show gradually became one of the most popular sitcoms worldwide.
Kudrow shared that during that time, she was appearing on two different shows with distinct characters. To avoid confusing the audience, the creators devised an interesting solution. Kudrow’s character Ursula Buffay from “Mad About You” was introduced as Phoebe’s twin sister in “Friends.” This change resonated well with viewers, allowing her to portray both Ursula and Phoebe.
