Ranchi, July 20: A tragic incident occurred in the Saraikela-Kharsawan district of Jharkhand during a ritual ceremony on Sunday. A lightning strike resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a nine-year-old girl, while five others sustained injuries. The injured are currently receiving treatment at the Saraikela Sadar Hospital. The village is engulfed in mourning following this unfortunate event.
According to police reports, the accident took place in the village of Nuwagoda, located within the Saraikela police jurisdiction. The ceremony was held in memory of Roshni Suren’s mother, attracting a large gathering of family and villagers. Suddenly, the weather changed dramatically, accompanied by loud thunder, and lightning struck the area. Many attendees were caught in its path. The victims, Roshni Suren, aged nine, and 32-year-old Sonu Sardar, died on the spot. The injured include Malti Suren (6), Sonamuni Suren (12), Baby Suren (40), Radhi Suren (35), and Sunil Gagarai (18).
Local residents quickly assisted in transporting the injured to Saraikela Sadar Hospital, where they are under continuous medical observation. The police have taken possession of the bodies for post-mortem examinations, and necessary legal procedures are underway. This incident has left the entire Nuwagoda village in deep shock.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid gathering in open areas during adverse weather conditions and to heed the advice of the meteorological department. This year, over 30 lives have been lost to lightning strikes during the monsoon season in Jharkhand, with more than 100 individuals injured.
