New Delhi: The aviation infrastructure in Leh, situated in a highly challenging and high-altitude region, has been significantly upgraded with the completion of a new runway project. This development will facilitate safer and smoother ground movement of aircraft and accelerate the departure of civilian flights from Leh.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the upgraded runway and airport facilities will enhance civil aviation services in the region. On Thursday, the Ministry announced the inauguration of this project at the Air Force Station Leh, aimed at improving the civil aviation infrastructure despite the difficult terrain and harsh weather conditions. The infrastructure upgrade was completed in record time.
The Defence Ministry highlighted that the improved infrastructure will not only ease aircraft ground operations but also speed up civilian flight departures. Passengers will benefit from increased convenience and reduced travel time. Enhanced air connectivity is expected to give a major boost to tourism and create new economic opportunities in the Leh area, thereby improving local livelihoods. The upgraded facilities will ensure more reliable air services for both residents and visitors.
Importantly, the strengthened aviation infrastructure will also play a crucial role in humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations. Earlier incidents underline this need, such as when two foreign nationals were stranded on a snow-covered peak above 17,000 feet in Ladakh. A swift and sensitive rescue operation was carried out at night, saving both individuals who were then provided immediate medical care.
Similarly, the Indian Air Force played a vital role in airlifting a critically ill 38-year-old Ladakhi citizen from Leh to Delhi for urgent medical treatment. This mission underscored the importance of rapid response capabilities in emergencies, which will be further enhanced by the new infrastructure.
The Defence Ministry believes that strengthening civil aviation facilities in Ladakh marks a significant achievement born out of close coordination among various agencies. This development is expected to contribute meaningfully to the long-term socio-economic progress of the region.
