Washington, July 22: President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that Lebanon could potentially become part of the Abraham Accords in the future. This indicates that his administration aims to expand these agreements, which have established normalized relations, despite the long-standing tensions between Lebanon and Israel.
During a press conference following a meeting with Lebanese President Michel Aoun at the White House, Trump was asked about Lebanon’s laws prohibiting contact with Israel. He mentioned that he would address this issue with President Aoun.
Trump described the Abraham Accords as a significant success, expressing optimism that more countries would soon join. He noted that despite recent regional conflicts, these agreements have remained strong, with no country withdrawing during these challenging times. He believes Lebanon could play a crucial role in this initiative.
While President Aoun did not directly reference the Abraham Accords, he discussed the framework of recent agreements with Israel, emphasizing the ultimate goal of permanently ending hostilities between Lebanon and Israel.
Aoun termed this development a “historic achievement,” stating that both leaders share a vision for peace and stability in the region. He asserted that the time has come for Lebanon and the entire region to achieve stability and security.
Trump expressed hope that the relationship between the United States and Lebanon would extend beyond security, fostering growth in trade and other sectors.
When asked about the possibility of resuming direct commercial flights between the two countries, he stated, “I see it as entirely possible.”
Regarding Israeli military activities in southern Lebanon, Trump mentioned that the army is “in the process of returning,” and discussions will continue to strengthen the Lebanese armed forces, with concrete plans already in place.
