Shimla, September 4 (Kiran News). Continuous heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh has triggered widespread landslides and flash floods, causing major damage across several districts. Kullu and Chamba have been hit the hardest, while higher reaches are witnessing fresh snowfall, intensifying cold conditions. Several national highways remain blocked, over 3,000 transformers are out of service, and many areas are without electricity. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in Kullu, Shimla, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti.

One dead, six trapped in Kullu
In Kullu district’s Akhara Bazar area, two houses were buried under debris after a landslide early Wednesday morning. Deputy Commissioner Toral S. Ravish confirmed that one person has died, while six others—five migrant workers from Kashmir and one local woman—remain trapped. Teams from NDRF, SDRF, and police are engaged in rescue operations, and three people have been pulled out safely so far.
Heavy damage in Chamba
In Chamba, torrential rain caused water and debris to enter homes and shops in Mai Ka Bagh, Sultanpur, and Balu Mohalla. Several industrial units in Sultanpur were destroyed after being buried under landslide debris, while vehicles were also damaged. Flash floods filled houses in Balu Mohalla with mud and silt. Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal visited the affected areas and instructed officials to expedite relief and damage assessment.
Power supply hit in Sirmaur
In Sirmaur’s Paonta Sahib, dozens of villages were left in darkness after transformers were washed away in overflowing rivers. The Giri river is in spate, and several areas are experiencing a blackout as the electricity department works to restore supply on a war footing.
Rising water levels in Kangra and Bhakra
The Pong Dam in Kangra crossed its danger mark with water levels reaching 1394.52 feet against the 1390-feet threshold. Nearly one lakh cusecs of water has been released, impacting low-lying areas in Fatehpur and Indora in Kangra as well as parts of Punjab’s Hoshiarpur and Pathankot.
The Bhakra Dam is also under pressure, with the Govind Sagar reservoir touching 1678.97 feet, just one foot below the danger mark. Authorities have opened four floodgates by eight feet each, releasing over 73,000 cusecs of water.
Roads blocked in Mandi, Sirmaur
In Mandi, the Mandi–Kullu National Highway remains blocked due to recurring landslides. The road was briefly opened for two hours in the past four days, allowing over 300 vehicles to pass, but fresh slides have again shut the route. Hundreds of vehicles remain stranded as alternative roads via Katoala-Kanauj and Rahla are also blocked.
