Jammu, March 6: Kavin Gupta, the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, has resigned from his position after approximately eight months in office. He took the oath of office on July 18, 2025, becoming the third LG of the Union Territory.
During his tenure, unrest in the region escalated. Civil society groups, including the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance, protested for statehood, protection under the Sixth Schedule, and job reservations for locals. Reports indicate that Gupta faced public anger during a visit to a local monastery on Wednesday.
Gupta joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at the age of 13. He spent thirteen months in jail during the Emergency. From 1978 to 1979, he served as the Secretary of the Punjab unit of the Vishva Hindu Parishad and was the Chief of the Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha from 1993 to 1998.
He was elected Mayor of Jammu three times from 2005 to 2010. In the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, he contested as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and defeated the incumbent Congress MLA Raman Bhalla from the Gandhi Nagar constituency. Subsequently, he was elected Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on March 19, 2015.
On April 30, 2018, Gupta was appointed Deputy Chief Minister, replacing Nirmal Kumar Singh, but resigned 51 days later when the BJP withdrew its alliance with the PDP. He was appointed as the third Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh on July 14, 2025, and took the oath of office on July 18, 2025.
