Kuwait, May 28: Tensions in West Asia are escalating once again. In a recent incident, Iran launched a drone attack on a U.S. base in Kuwait. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) reported on Thursday that Iran fired a ballistic missile towards Kuwait, which was successfully intercepted by Kuwaiti forces.
CENTCOM stated on social media platform X, “At 10:17 PM ET on May 27, Iran launched a ballistic missile towards Kuwait, which was successfully intercepted by the Kuwaiti army.”
The command further noted, “This significant ceasefire violation by the Iranian government occurred when the Iranian military launched five one-way attack drones, posing a clear threat in and around the Strait of Hormuz. All drones were successfully intercepted by U.S. forces. A sixth drone launch from an Iranian ground control site at Bandar Abbas port was also thwarted.”
On Wednesday, the Kuwaiti Army announced that the nation’s air defense systems were facing missile and drone attacks from adversaries. According to the army’s general staff, the explosions heard were the result of the air defense system successfully intercepting enemy attacks.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) condemned the attack on Thursday, labeling it as “Iran’s terrorist drone and missile assault.”
In a statement, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said, “These terrorist attacks are a blatant violation of Kuwait’s sovereignty and pose a threat to its security and stability.” The ministry expressed full solidarity with Kuwait and pledged support for all measures to ensure its safety and stability.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump denied any arrangements that would allow Iran to control the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that this strategic maritime route would remain open to all nations, regardless of their government’s ongoing negotiations with Tehran regarding its nuclear program.
During a Cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump stated, “The Strait will remain open for everyone. No one will control it. It is international waters.”
He added that Iran had attempted to assert control over essential oil shipping lanes during ongoing negotiations but warned that the U.S. would not permit this. “They would like to control it. No one will control it,” he asserted.
