Kumaraswamy Opposes Inclusion of Kambala in Mysuru Dasara Celebrations

Bengaluru, July 11: Central Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy expressed his opposition on Saturday to the proposal of including Kambala in the Karnataka government’s Mysuru Dasara celebrations. He emphasized that there is no need to alter the traditional essence of this world-famous festival.

Kambala is a traditional buffalo racing festival celebrated in the coastal regions of South Canara and Udupi districts in Karnataka.

In a statement, Kumaraswamy remarked that Mysuru Dasara has developed its unique identity and heritage over the years, and any attempt to change its traditional form should be avoided. He stated that there is no necessity to incorporate Kambala into the Mysuru Dasara festivities, which are renowned for their unique traditions and grandeur.

He highlighted that Kambala is an integral part of the cultural heritage of coastal Karnataka, deeply intertwined with the region’s customs, beliefs, and geography. Kumaraswamy noted that Kambala symbolizes the cultural richness and faith of the coastal area. This tradition is inherently linked to the geography and lifestyle of the region. Bringing it to Mysuru would undermine the sanctity and divine heritage associated with both traditions, which is unacceptable.

The central minister further explained that the true essence of Kambala lies within the natural environment of coastal Karnataka, which is rich in greenery and abundant water. Experiencing Kambala in that natural setting is unique and delightful. There is no need to hurt the sentiments of the people of Mysuru or those from the coastal region by relocating this event.

His comments come amid ongoing debates regarding the Karnataka government’s proposal to include Kambala as an attraction in the 2026 Mysuru Dasara celebrations. This move has faced opposition from the Mysuru royal family, heritage experts, and several organizations.
