Mumbai, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian stock market showed a notable recovery on September 16, 2026, bouncing back from two days of losses. This upturn came as oil prices softened ahead of a key policy meeting by the U.S. Federal Reserve. Major benchmark indices, including the Nifty and Sensex, saw increases of up to 0.45%, supported by strong performances from the FMCG, real estate, and PSU banking sectors.
The Sensex rose by 332.63 points, or 0.45%, closing at 74,336.45. Meanwhile, the Nifty50 gained 99 points, or 0.43%, finishing at 23,217.60. However, the broader market experienced slight declines, with the Nifty midcap and smallcap indices falling by 0.01% and 0.18%, respectively.
Sector-wise, the Nifty FMCG, Nifty PSU Bank, and Nifty Realty indices performed well, recording gains of 1.63%, 1.44%, and 0.99%. In contrast, the Nifty IT, Nifty Pharma, and Nifty Healthcare sectors faced the most significant declines.
Within the Nifty50 index, stocks such as TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, L&T, and Bajaj Finserv saw the largest drops. On the other hand, top gainers included HDFC Life, SBI Life, SBI, and ITC.
Market analysts noted that the Nifty faces resistance in the range of 23,300 to 23,400, which could hinder recovery. For a positive outlook, the index must maintain levels above 23,500. Immediate support is seen between 23,100 and 23,070. A decisive drop below 23,070 could increase selling pressure, potentially pushing the index down to the 23,000 to 22,800 range.
As investors await the outcome of the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting, they are keen to understand the central bank’s stance on future interest rates. Experts suggest that if the Fed’s comments remain balanced, there could be further recovery in the market. Conversely, a hawkish tone from the central bank, rising bond yields, or Brent crude approaching $110 per barrel could lead to renewed selling pressure and limit recovery.
Analysts emphasize that investors are closely monitoring remarks from the Fed Chairman, as indications regarding future interest rates will play a crucial role in determining global liquidity, capital flows, and the near-term direction of financial markets.
