Hyderabad, May 6: K.T. Rama Rao (KTR), the executive president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), has called on the Congress government to awaken from its ‘deep slumber’ and take immediate action to ensure the procurement of farmers’ produce in Telangana.
KTR criticized the state government’s inaction despite a significant influx of rice, maize, peanuts, and other crops into the markets. On Tuesday, he visited several procurement centers in the undivided Warangal district to assess the ground situation.
According to a party statement, he inspected the Ukkal Society in the Ghisukonda Mandal of the Parkala constituency and the Narsampet market yard. During his visit, KTR engaged with farmers and listened to their grievances in detail.
Farmers expressed their frustration over the delays in procurement, stating that even after nearly a month, the government has not provided any clarity. The prolonged halt in procurement for over 15 days has caused significant losses and hardships for the farmers. They also alleged that repeated appeals to Markfed officials and the district administration have been ignored.
KTR spoke with Markfed’s Managing Director Srinivas Reddy, questioning the government’s attitude and the agency’s failures. He demanded that the government clarify whether it intends to procure crops or leave farmers to fend for themselves.
He pointed out that the government has failed to reach the minimum procurement levels. While the government claims to have purchased 600,000 metric tons of maize, the reality on the ground tells a different story, with farmers struggling to sell their produce.
KTR accused the government of deliberately avoiding procurement to evade paying farmers the minimum support price (MSP) of ₹2,460 and the promised bonus. He also alleged that approximately ₹23,000 crore raised in the name of Markfed has been diverted for other purposes, crippling the agency’s ability to function effectively.
KTR stated, “The Congress government has completely failed the farmers. If it has any sense of responsibility, it should immediately release funds under the Rythu Bandhu scheme and ensure the unconditional procurement of all crops.”
He warned that if the government continues to neglect farmers, the BRS will intensify its movement and surround the government across the state.
KTR also reminded that Rahul Gandhi had released a farmers’ manifesto from Warangal, making several promises, but there has been no progress in its implementation. He assured farmers that the BRS stands firmly with them and will continue to fight until every grain produced is procured and justice is served.
