Kolkata High Court Denies Urgent Hearing on Opposition Leaders Rally Request

Kolkata, August 19: The Kolkata High Court has denied an urgent hearing on a petition filed by Ritabrata Banerjee, the leader of the opposition in the assembly. He sought permission to hold a rally on the occasion of the Trinamool Student Council’s foundation day next week.

The rebel faction of the Trinamool Congress approached the Kolkata High Court after the police denied permission for the rally. They requested an immediate hearing on the matter.

Judge Sougata Bhattacharya’s bench stated that the hearing could not take place immediately. Consequently, the petition has been scheduled for a hearing, with the next session expected on Friday.

The foundation day of the Trinamool Student Council is set for August 28.

Notably, there has been ongoing tension between the faction led by Mamata Banerjee and the one led by Ritabrata Banerjee regarding the foundation day celebrations. Both factions wish to hold the event near the Gandhi statue on Mayo Road, but Kolkata police have not granted permission to the Trinamool faction for this event.

After being denied permission by the police, the faction led by Mamata Banerjee approached the Kolkata High Court on Monday, seeking approval to hold the event on August 20. Justice Bhattacharya accepted this petition and scheduled it for hearing on August 19.

It is important to note that the Trinamool Congress has traditionally organized a rally on foundation day near the Gandhi statue in central Kolkata.

However, this year is different. Following their recent defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress has split into three factions.

Most members of the Trinamool Congress have joined the National Citizen Party of India (NCPI). Meanwhile, another faction, known as the rebel group, is currently led by Ritabrata Banerjee, while the remaining legislators are aligned with Mamata Banerjee.
