Kolkata High Court Denies Bail to Sheikh Shahjahan in ED Attack Case

Kolkata, March 19: In a significant setback for Sheikh Shahjahan and his brother Alamgir, the Kolkata High Court has rejected their bail applications in connection with the high-profile attack on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team during the Sandeshkhali case.

The incident occurred when the ED conducted a raid related to a Public Distribution System (PDS) scam involving millions of rupees. During the operation at Shahjahan’s residence, supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) launched a violent attack on the ED officials and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel accompanying them. This incident triggered a political uproar across the state, prompting the case to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further inquiry.

On Thursday, while presenting his bail plea before Justice Suvra Ghosh of the single-judge bench, Shahjahan faced opposition from the CBI’s lawyer. The lawyer argued that granting bail would enable Shahjahan to influence witnesses and tamper with evidence. It was also noted that while in custody, Shahjahan had previously attempted to intimidate and threaten the children of key witnesses through his underworld associates, who remain at large.

Justice Ghosh accepted these arguments and denied the bail request. However, the court clarified that Shahjahan retains the right to file a new bail application based on the progress of the investigation and any emerging facts.

Both Sheikh Shahjahan and Alamgir were arrested by the CBI during the investigation. Following their arrest, they filed bail applications in court. The CBI opposed the bail, emphasizing the seriousness of the case and the potential impact on the investigation if the accused were released. The Kolkata High Court upheld the CBI’s arguments, leading to the rejection of the bail applications.

It is noteworthy that Shahjahan was initially arrested by the West Bengal Police before being transferred to the CBI, which is currently investigating the matter.
