Patna, March 17: Bihar’s Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar stated on Monday that law enforcement is taking decisive action against criminals while adhering to legal boundaries. This statement follows a series of encounters in the districts of Saran and Patna.
The comments were made after a shootout in Saran district on Sunday night, which was followed by another shooting incident in the flood-prone sub-division on Monday morning.
DGP Vinay Kumar emphasized, “Police forces in the affected areas are responding to the situation and acting against criminals within the framework of the law.”
Referring to the incident in Saran, where five individuals died from consuming toxic alcohol, the DGP confirmed the presence of poisonous liquor. The police have taken action against those involved in the illegal liquor trade and have made arrests.
According to officials, between March 11 and March 13, five people reportedly died from consuming counterfeit alcohol in villages under the jurisdiction of the Panapur and Mashrakh police stations, with 12 others falling ill.
In this case, the police arrested Suraj Mahto (26), son of Munni Mahto, a resident of Mithwa village in the Panapur police station area. Suraj is accused of being involved in supplying toxic alcohol and had been on the run since the incident.
Acting on a tip-off, police located him in Katihar, where he was arrested and subsequently brought to Saran for further questioning. During the interrogation, police took the accused to the Mashrakh-Panapur border area to conduct a raid aimed at seizing illegal liquor and identifying other members of the network.
Officials reported that during the raid, associates of the accused opened fire on the police team in an attempt to rescue him. The police responded in self-defense, resulting in Suraj Mahto sustaining a gunshot wound to his leg. He was later taken into custody and provided with medical treatment.
In another incident, a shootout occurred between the Bihar Special Task Force (STF) and a notorious criminal named Dheeraj Singh in the Pandarak police station area of the flood-prone sub-division in Patna district.
Police officials noted that multiple criminal cases are already registered against the accused. Investigations are ongoing in both cases.
