Kolkata, March 31: The Cyber Crime Division of West Bengal Police has arrested Kolkata businessman Pawan Kumar Ruiya in connection with a ₹600 crore cyber fraud case.
Pawan Ruiya, the founder and chairman of Ruiya Group, had built a reputation as a major player in acquiring various government and private companies. He was under surveillance by cyber crime investigators due to his alleged involvement in the fraud.
Ruiya was apprehended on Tuesday evening outside a luxury hotel located in New Town, in the northern outskirts of Kolkata.
A senior officer from the state police revealed that this arrest was made following a complaint lodged by a man named Swapna Kumar Mandal at the Eco Park police station, which falls under Bidhannagar City Police jurisdiction in 2024.
It is alleged that the money collected through various online scams across the country was deposited into different bank accounts belonging to Ruiya and his family members. During the investigation, cyber experts initially uncovered transactions amounting to ₹315 crore. Subsequently, in November last year, the Cyber Crime Division of West Bengal Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Ruiya.
Police claim that the funds obtained from the cyber fraud were funneled through over 148 ‘shell companies’ registered in the names of Ruiya and several family members. The money was deposited into the accounts of these companies.
At that time, investigators also conducted raids and searches at Ruiya’s residence. Later, police asserted that the total amount involved in the fraud was approximately ₹600 crore.
Reports indicate that the bank accounts where the cyber fraud money was deposited were allegedly operated from the ‘Ruiya Center’ located at 46 Syed Amir Ali Avenue in Kolkata-17.
It is noteworthy that Pawan Ruiya was previously arrested in 2016 for a case involving the theft of railway equipment from the Jessop factory, which was once under the Ruiya Group’s control. After the closure of the Jessop and Dunlop factories owned by him, the state government attempted to take them over.
