Mumbai, June 23: Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha delivered a strong response to the opposition regarding the name change of King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital during a legislative council meeting on Tuesday.
Lodha emphasized that the British colonial era was a time of exploitation for India. He stated that King Edward is not a symbol of pride for India but rather a representation of the period of slavery. He further asserted that King Edward enslaved India and plundered its wealth, taking it back to England. Claiming that King Edward contributed wealth to India is entirely misleading.
In a pointed critique, he remarked that King Edward was akin to a figure responsible for the deaths of millions of Indians. He condemned those who support the name of King Edward. For the name change of KEM, Lodha mentioned that three alternative names have been proposed, and the government will make an appropriate decision regarding this matter. He clarified that regardless of which of the three proposed names is chosen, the abbreviation ‘KEM’ will remain unchanged.
When questioned about the name change of Trump Tower, Minister Lodha clarified that the name Trump was given solely due to a business partnership and has no connection to any form of honor or glorification. During this discussion, legislative council member Milind Narvekar raised questions about Lodha’s business. In response, Lodha stated that his business is well-known globally and the source of his income is clear to all. However, he remarked, “What is your business? We do not know. Yet, you drive around in a bigger car than mine.”
