Thiruvananthapuram, April 27: Sanjana Philo Chacko, a 12th-grade student from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has made the nation proud by winning a silver medal at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) 2026 held in Bordeaux, France.
Sanjana, who has consistently excelled in mathematics, was part of a four-member Indian team selected through a rigorous multi-stage national selection process.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned her achievement in a recent episode of “Mann Ki Baat,” where he praised India’s performance at this global event. Responding to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Sanjana expressed that this moment was a source of immense pride and inspiration for her and other aspiring students.
She shared that during the “Mann Ki Baat” program, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s accomplishments in this competition. “I hope this inspires many students, especially girls, to pursue their passions. It serves as a significant motivation for my further studies,” she said.
Sanjana also discussed the challenging selection process for the Olympiad, which assesses students’ mathematical skills at multiple levels. The first stage is the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM), an objective exam, followed by two subjective rounds: the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) and the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO).
According to Sanjana, only a handful of top-performing girls from the INMO are selected for an intensive training camp, where they undergo advanced coaching and rigorous examinations. From this training camp, the top four students are chosen to represent India at the EGMO.
The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad is a prestigious international competition aimed at encouraging young women to pursue mathematics at a high level. Participants from around the world engage in challenging problem-solving tests that require deep analytical thinking and creativity.
Sanjana marked her fourth appearance representing India in this esteemed international competition. Her repeated selection and consistent outstanding performance reflect her dedication and passion for the subject.
Her success is seen as an inspiration for young students, particularly girls, to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
