Mumbai, October 28 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian stock market ended in the red on October 28, 2026, with the Sensex dropping by 352.64 points, or 0.48%, to close at 73,246.03. The Nifty index also saw a decline, falling by 50.90 points, or 0.22%, to finish at 22,698.85.

The decline was primarily observed in large-cap stocks. In contrast, the Nifty Midcap 100 index gained 244.80 points, or 0.43%, closing at 57,274.70, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index rose by 166.20 points, or 0.90%, to end at 18,634.90.

Among the top gainers, Nifty Auto surged by 1.45%, followed by Nifty Consumer Durables at 1.41%, Nifty Media at 1.38%, Nifty Healthcare at 1.15%, Nifty Pharma at 1.04%, Nifty Financial Services at 0.47%, and Nifty Private Bank at 0.35%.

On the downside, Nifty Oil and Gas led the losses with a drop of 2.27%, followed by Nifty IT at -1.98%, Nifty Commodities at -0.95%, Nifty Energy at -0.89%, and Nifty Realty also at -0.89%.

In the Sensex pack, stocks like L&T, Trent, SBI, Axis Bank, Indigo, HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Finance, and M&M were among the gainers. Conversely, Reliance Industries, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, TCS, Bharti Airtel, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finserv, and HCL Tech faced significant losses.

Experts noted that the domestic markets experienced volatility, closing lower due to a sudden spike in crude oil prices and heavy selling in IT stocks, which negatively impacted investor sentiment. Additionally, the market is closely monitoring the upcoming U.S. midterm elections for clearer geopolitical insights.

Despite the downturn, strong earnings from the banking, auto, and pharma sectors, along with buying at lower levels, helped the indices recover a significant portion of their initial losses. Investors are now focused on the Federal Reserve’s policy guidance.
