Thiruvananthapuram, April 24: In response to ongoing heatwave warnings across Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has urged citizens to observe a ‘self-lockdown’ from 11 AM to 3 PM.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially issued heat warnings for the districts of Palakkad, Kollam, and Thrissur, as temperatures have soared above 40 degrees Celsius. High humidity levels are exacerbating the heat in other districts as well. In such conditions, it is crucial for everyone to remain extremely vigilant.
The rising temperatures can lead to serious health issues, even fatalities. Therefore, strict adherence to the following safety guidelines is essential.
Avoid going outside between 11 AM and 3 PM. Stay out of direct sunlight during this period. Treat this time as a ‘self-lockdown’ similar to the COVID-19 phase, and refrain from unnecessary travel and outdoor activities. Ensure proper ventilation at home and workplaces.
Even if you do not feel thirsty, drink plenty of clean water. Avoid beverages that can dehydrate the body. Ensure you consume nutritious food.
Wear light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothing. When stepping outside, make sure to carry an umbrella, wear appropriate footwear, and use sunglasses.
Elderly individuals, children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those with health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, skin disorders, and albinism should completely avoid going outside during this time.
Public gatherings and sports events in open spaces are prohibited between 11 AM and 3 PM. During festivals, parades, elephant processions, and fireworks should either be avoided or rescheduled. Extra caution should be exercised to prevent fire hazards.
Ensure that pets and stray animals have access to drinking water and shade. Do not let them graze outside during the day. Due to extreme heat, animals may become restless, so be cautious of potential attacks from wild animals and stray dogs.
The labor department has adjusted working hours to prevent outdoor work during the day. This directive must be strictly followed. Employment-related activities during the day have been completely halted. Instructions have been issued to ensure drinking water and shade for traffic police, along with leniency in their uniforms. Hospitals and ambulances, including primary health centers, have been equipped to provide first aid for heat-related issues.
Local bodies, Kudumbashree, volunteer organizations, and businesses should step forward to provide drinking water and shade for travelers and the general public.
If you feel fatigued or exhibit symptoms of heat exhaustion, seek medical assistance immediately. If you notice someone else in distress, move them to a shaded area, try to cool their body, and provide medical help.
