Thiruvananthapuram, March 15: Kerala is set to hold its assembly elections on April 9, 2026, with a likely contest among three major fronts. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by CPI(M), the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), headed by Congress, and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by BJP, are gearing up for the battle.
The state has a total of 140 assembly seats. In the 2021 elections, the LDF secured 99 seats, while the Congress-led UDF won 41 seats, and the BJP failed to win any seats, having only secured one in 2016.
Political analysts indicate that election trends in the state are often influenced by the results of local body elections, which typically occur a few months prior. If this pattern continues, the Congress-led UDF may have an edge, given their strong performance in recent local elections, where the LDF came in second and the BJP in third.
Over the past two decades, the performance of all three fronts in assembly elections has often mirrored the results of local body polls. The front that gains an advantage in local elections tends to carry that momentum into the assembly elections, positioning itself to form the government.
This pattern has been observed across multiple election cycles. Decisions made at the panchayat, municipality, and corporation levels often signal the public mood ahead of the assembly elections.
The ruling LDF is led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. This election marks a critical test for the LDF as they aim to maintain power for a third consecutive term, a feat never achieved in Kerala’s electoral history. The LDF returned to power in 2021, breaking the long-standing tradition of changing governments in the state.
The UDF is led by opposition leader VD Satheesan, who hopes to capitalize on anti-incumbency sentiments against the LDF government. Congress leaders believe that the political cycle in the state and the public mood reflected in local elections could favor a change in government.
For the BJP-led NDA, this election presents an opportunity to enhance their political identity in the state, as they have struggled to convert their vote share into assembly seats. The alliance hopes that the victory of Suresh Gopi in Thrissur during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will boost their visibility and position them as a strong contender in this triangular contest.
