Kerala Elections: CCTV Surveillance at 2,177 Polling Stations in Kannur

Kannur, April 5: As the political atmosphere heats up ahead of the Kerala Assembly elections, the state administration is gearing up for the polls. Following directives from the Election Commission, local authorities are finalizing their election preparations. In this effort, CCTV cameras will be installed inside and outside all polling stations in Kannur district.

The implementation of 100% webcasting and the installation of cameras outside polling booths will ensure a seamless and transparent electoral process. Work is progressing swiftly to set up cameras at the 2,177 polling stations in the district. These cameras will allow for accurate monitoring of long queues of voters outside the booths.

A two-tier system has been established for real-time monitoring of webcasting. A district-level control room will operate from the Kannur Collectorate, while another control room will function under the supervision of the respective returning officer in each assembly constituency. Election observers will also visit the constituency-level control rooms.

Special training has been prepared for the staff involved in the webcasting section. All footage of the voting process in Kannur district will be recorded on hard disks and later submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer of the state.

The elections in Kerala feature a triangular contest among the Left Democratic Front (LDF), United Democratic Front (UDF), and National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The LDF, led by the CPI(M), faces the challenge of retaining power, while the Congress-led UDF aims for a comeback. The NDA, led by the BJP, is hopeful for significant success.

The BJP’s main alliance partner in Kerala is the BDJS. The regional party Twenty20 has also joined the NDA. Other parties, including the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Shiv Sena, and the National People’s Party (NPP) led by Conrad Sangma, are part of the NDA coalition.

The elections for the 140 members of the Kerala Assembly are scheduled for April 9, with results to be announced on May 4. A total of 890 candidates are contesting in this election. According to the final voter list published by the Election Commission of India, 27.1 million voters are eligible to cast their votes in the Kerala elections.
