Kolkata, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : The West Bengal government has appointed Karthik Maharaj, a Padma Shri awardee, as the chairman of Kolkata’s street renaming committee. Following this new role, his office has been set up in a renovated room previously occupied by Debabrata Majumdar, a former member of the Mayor-in-Council. On Monday, Maharaj visited his new office and officially took charge.
In an interview after assuming office, Maharaj shared his thoughts on his responsibilities, Indian culture, and the significance of street names in Kolkata. He welcomed the state government’s initiative to foster discussions around topics related to Indian culture and religion. Maharaj emphasized the need for comprehensive dialogue about Indian culture, which he considers a vital aspect of his new role.
He referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s repeated emphasis on the name “Bharat” and its cultural identity, stating that the country’s identity should be firmly rooted in this name. Maharaj noted that the foundation of Indian culture is deeply intertwined with religious and spiritual traditions, highlighting the importance of “Dharma,” as mentioned in the first verse of the Bhagavad Gita.
Addressing concerns about political bias in naming streets, Maharaj asserted that the current government has not included any political figures in the committee. Instead, it comprises individuals capable of discussing topics related to religion, Indian culture, and history. Decisions regarding street names will not be made by a single person but through consultations with experts from various fields, including historians, religious leaders, and educators. This collaborative approach aims to consider multiple perspectives on the matter.
When asked about the names of major streets in Kolkata associated with past political parties and their leaders, Maharaj clarified that the committee’s goal is not to favor or oppose any political party. The focus will be on the historical, cultural, and social significance of street names rather than their political affiliations. Any proposals for renaming will be thoroughly discussed before moving forward.
Regarding the name of “Vishwabangla Sarani,” Maharaj mentioned that he has received suggestions from a few individuals to rename the street after a revered figure they consider a “world guru.” He stated that rather than immediately accepting or rejecting the proposal, it would be discussed within the committee, and any decisions will follow a structured process.
