Karnatakas Former CM Calls for Safe Return of Kannadigas from Iran Amid Middle East Tensions

Haveri, March 1: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai emphasized the duty of the government to coordinate with the central authorities to ensure the safe return of Kannadigas and other Indians from Iran and other unstable Middle Eastern countries.

Speaking to the media, he highlighted the need for the state government to arrange temporary food and shelter for Kannadigas residing in Dubai and those stranded in other Middle Eastern nations through the Indian embassy. He urged for their immediate repatriation in light of the ongoing conflict between the U.S.-Israel and Iran.

Bommai stated that it is everyone’s responsibility to work with the Indian government to bring back Kannadigas and other Indians safely to their homeland. He expressed concern over the escalating conflict, noting its potential impact on India.

The former Chief Minister pointed out that the situation could significantly affect the petroleum sector and have a broader economic impact. He stressed that the consequences of this conflict would be felt globally.

He suggested that resolving the issue through dialogue would be prudent. Many Middle Eastern countries are affected by war, leaving Indians, particularly Kannadigas, stranded. Numerous Kannadigas have traveled to Doha, Dubai, and Kuwait in search of work, and it is common for people from Europe to transit through Dubai and Doha, with many now stuck there.

The BJP leader acknowledged that the central government has already taken several steps, and the state government is also working to facilitate their safe return. He recalled that during previous conflicts in Syria and Iraq, Prime Minister Narendra Modi successfully ensured the safe return of Indians.

Bommai reiterated that ensuring the safe return of Indians, especially Kannadigas, is the state government’s responsibility. He noted that many individuals are facing hardships due to a lack of money and food.

He urged the state government to arrange for temporary food and shelter for the large number of Kannadigas living in Dubai and to take immediate measures for their repatriation.
