Karnataka Cabinet Approves Modernization of Prison Department

Bengaluru, August 22: The Karnataka Cabinet has approved a plan to modernize the state’s prison department by acquiring and installing advanced technological equipment. This includes artificial intelligence (AI) cameras and portable signal jammers. Minister Priyank Kharge, overseeing Home, Information Technology, Biotechnology, and E-Governance, announced this decision on Friday.

The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

Minister Kharge emphasized that the state government’s aim is to enhance security, surveillance, and operational efficiency within the state’s prisons.

As part of the modernization initiative, advanced tools such as AI-powered cameras, portable signal jammers, and a prisoner calling system will be implemented in the prisons.

The new technology is expected to help prevent unauthorized activities within prison premises and strengthen security monitoring.

Kharge stated, “Given the evolving challenges, advanced technology is essential in the prison department. This step is taken to further enhance security and surveillance.”

He added that the Cabinet’s approval is part of the state government’s efforts to incorporate technology-based monitoring and security measures into the prison department’s operations.

Recently, officials seized a phone, charger, pocket notebook, and a SanDisk pen drive from the cell of former JDS MP Prajwal Revanna and Pratap Rai.

Reports indicate that Revanna claimed the phone belonged to Pratap Rai. A video surfaced showing Revanna talking on a mobile phone inside his jail cell, raising questions about the conduct of prison officials.

Following the discovery of the mobile phone in Revanna’s barrack, Assistant Superintendent of the jail, Iranna Rangapur, was suspended for negligence.

Bengaluru Central Jail Superintendent Anshu Kumar has been issued a show-cause notice.

DGP (Prisons) Alok Kumar stated that a detailed departmental inquiry has been ordered.
