Bengaluru, March 13: In a significant development, BJP legislator Byrathi Basavaraj has been granted conditional bail by a special court for representatives in Bengaluru. This decision comes in the context of the notorious murder case of criminal Biklu Shiva.
Basavaraj, who represents the K.R. Puram assembly constituency, was placed in judicial custody following his arrest in connection with the case, which has garnered considerable attention in Karnataka.
The court has set the bail amount at two lakh rupees, requiring two sureties. Additionally, Basavaraj has been instructed not to tamper with evidence, influence witnesses, or leave the jurisdiction without court permission.
The case escalated into a political controversy when allegations surfaced linking the legislator to the incident. The Karnataka High Court had previously dismissed his anticipatory bail plea, leading to his arrest. The Supreme Court also denied him relief.
Basavaraj has been named as the fifth accused in the murder case of Shiva, who was brutally attacked with a sharp weapon outside his home in the Halsuru area of Bengaluru on July 15 last year.
The Bharatinagar police registered an FIR against Basavaraj based on a complaint from the victim’s mother. However, she later stated that she did not name the legislator in her complaint and was unsure how his name ended up in the FIR.
Authorities have indicated that Basavaraj had connections with the main accused, Rowdy Jagdish, also known as Jagga, during the investigation. Investigators claim that Basavaraj had direct contact with Jagdish and had met the victim several times before the murder.
The BJP has characterized the case as a politically motivated attack, accusing the Congress government of targeting Basavaraj. B.Y. Vijayendra, the BJP state president, visited the legislator’s home and emphasized that Basavaraj played a crucial role in strengthening the party after switching from Congress.
He further alleged that Basavaraj is being framed in a false case.
