Kolar, June 13: Senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition leader in the Karnataka Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, asserted on Saturday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a record for the longest tenure as an elected leader in a democratic setup. He accused Congress leaders of lacking clarity in India’s political history.
Speaking to reporters in Kolar, Narayanaswamy expressed confidence in the BJP’s future prospects. He believes that Prime Minister Modi will serve for two more terms and stated that India will become the world’s number one economy by 2047.
Commenting on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, Narayanaswamy accused Congress of opposing it out of fear. He likened the revision process to weeding out duplicates or ineligible names from the voter lists.
He also claimed that the BJP has spent years correcting the mistakes made by Congress governments, asserting that Congress policies have hindered the country’s development.
Narayanaswamy criticized Congress leaders, including KPCC President BK Hariprasad, for making statements without understanding the facts. He emphasized that Prime Minister Modi has governed the country longer under a democratic electoral framework than Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, or Manmohan Singh.
He urged Congress leaders to learn to respect democracy, highlighting that Modi has repeatedly contested and won elections, establishing a long-term governance record.
Questioning Congress’s claims about former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Narayanaswamy alleged that Nehru became Prime Minister before the establishment of India’s constitutional democracy and was not elected by the public at that time. He asserted that Nehru’s appointment occurred under a transitional arrangement post-independence.
Referring to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he alleged that the Emergency she imposed violated democratic principles and should not be considered an ideal of democratic governance.
Narayanaswamy stated that Narendra Modi has been the longest-serving Prime Minister elected through constitutional and democratic processes, asserting that Congress has no moral right to question this record.
On the rising prices of cooking gas, he attributed the issue to global conflicts and their impact on energy supply. He also recalled that during former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s tenure, the UPA government decided to limit subsidized LPG cylinders, mentioning that Rahul Gandhi, then Leader of the Opposition, opposed this decision.
Comparing Congress-led governments with the Modi administration, Narayanaswamy claimed there is a significant difference in governance standards. He described the Modi government as corruption-free, alleging that large-scale corruption occurred during the tenures of Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh.
