Kamal Haasan Reflects on Pushpak and Modern Cinemas Shift in Focus

Chennai, June 8: Renowned actor and politician Kamal Haasan recently made headlines discussing the classic Indian film ‘Pushpak.’ He attended the pre-release event of director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao’s upcoming film ‘Sing Geetam’ in Chennai, the same director behind ‘Pushpak.’ During the event, he shared insights about the film’s budget and its remarkable success.

Kamal Haasan reminisced about the past, stating, “When we made ‘Pushpak,’ there was no concern about a big budget or pressure to earn profits. Our sole focus was on storytelling and artistry. Films were created with passion, and they later transformed into successful ventures.”

He further emphasized, “This film was made with a budget of just 1.5 million rupees, yet its success was so immense that its value today could easily be in the hundreds of millions. If it were made today, it would effortlessly gross around 2 billion rupees.”

Kamal Haasan noted the significant changes in filmmaking today. “Now, most films are created with a primary focus on their potential earnings, whereas in the past, artists prioritized the story and art. The business aspect emerged after the film’s completion. This shift is affecting the essence of cinema, as passion is gradually being sidelined.”

He remarked, “‘Pushpak’ and similar films cannot be measured solely by their earnings. Many films hold far greater value than their actual box office performance. The industry is slowly learning how to recognize the true worth of films.”

During the event, Kamal Haasan praised director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, stating, “Rao has always been a forward-thinking director, and his passion remains undiminished. Age is just a number; true strength lies in the mind and creativity. I would love to learn from him as his assistant director.”

At 94 years old, Singeetham Srinivasa Rao is making a comeback to directing. His new film ‘Sing Geetam’ is set to release in theaters on June 11.
