Judicial Review Completes for 67% Voters in West Bengal Elections

Kolkata, March 29: A judicial review has been completed for 67% of voters in West Bengal. According to a source from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office, the review process for 4 million voters was finalized by Sunday evening.

These 4 million voters represent approximately 67% of the total electorate of over 6 million, classified under the “logical discrepancy category” for review.

Out of the 4 million cases reviewed by Sunday evening, nearly 1.8 million were deemed eligible for exclusion. This indicates that about 45% of the reviewed cases were found to be eligible for removal.

However, those identified for exclusion during the review process have the option to appeal to one of the 19 appellate tribunals established for this purpose.

Excluding the 6 million cases sent for judicial determination, the final voter list was published on February 28. It was decided that supplementary lists would be released based on the progress of the review process.

Before the notification for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was issued last November, the total number of voters in the state was 76,637,529. The draft list published in December last year saw the removal of 5,820,899 names.

By the final voter list published on February 28, the number of removed names increased to 6,366,952.

A source from the CEO’s office stated that given the current pace of judicial determinations, it is expected that the process will be completed smoothly within this week.

Currently, over 700 judicial officers, including 100 each from neighboring states Odisha and Jharkhand, are involved in the determination process, working tirelessly to expedite the completion.

The assembly elections in West Bengal will be conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Voting will take place for 152 assembly constituencies in the first phase, and for the remaining 142 constituencies in the second phase.

The results of the assembly elections will be announced on May 4.
