John Blain Reinstated in Scotland Cricket Hall of Fame After Four Years

New Delhi, March 4: Former fast bowler John Blain has been reinstated into the Cricket Scotland Hall of Fame. The 47-year-old was suspended from this honor four years ago.

Expressing his joy upon reinstatement, Blain stated, “I am immensely grateful to everyone who stood by me after the false accusations of racism. Representing my country 118 times was the greatest honor of my life, and the decision to remove me from the Scottish Cricket Hall of Fame was one of the biggest shocks during a very difficult time for me and my family. Thankfully, after a lengthy process, I was proven innocent, having provided substantial evidence.”

Blain also thanked Umar Henry, the head of the Hall of Fame committee, saying, “The unanimous decision by the Cricket Scotland board to reinstate me means more than I can express. The game of cricket has provided for me and taught me hard work, integrity, teamwork, and fair play.”

Blain was inducted into the governing body in May 2019 but faced suspension in July 2022 after former teammates Majid Haq and Qasim Sheikh accused him of making racist comments during a tour to Kenya in 2007.

Cricket Scotland stated that Blain’s suspension would be lifted after he completed board-approved equality, diversity, and inclusion training.

While Cricket Scotland did not disclose details at the time, Blain’s case was one of several referrals from an independent review in July 2022, which found the governing body to be institutionally racist, leading to the resignation of the board.

Additionally, the ECB had also leveled racism allegations against him. This surfaced when Azeem Rafiq publicly shared his experiences of discrimination within his former county team, Yorkshire. Blain was among six former players found guilty in March 2023 related to this incident.

In January 2024, Cricket Scotland informed Blain that the allegations against him were baseless and that there was no case for him to answer. He had called for a public inquiry, stating that Cricket Scotland’s findings had significantly undermined the ECB process.
