Ranchi, February 23: Voting for the mayoral and ward council elections across 48 municipal bodies in Jharkhand concluded on Monday at 5 PM. The State Election Commission has yet to release the final voter turnout figures, but estimates suggest participation ranged from 45% to 60% across the state.

Voting commenced at 7 AM for nine municipal corporations, including Ranchi, Dhanbad, Deoghar, Adityapur, Chas, Medininagar, Hazaribagh, Giridih, and Mango, along with 20 municipal councils and 19 nagar panchayats. A total of 4,304 polling stations were established, where long lines of voters were seen from early morning.

Prominent figures, including Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, and MP Mahua Maji, also participated in the voting process. However, reports of violence, bogus voting, disputes, and disorder emerged from various locations throughout the state.

In the Chas area of Bokaro, a clash at one polling booth resulted in injuries to DSP Praveen Singh during a confrontation between police and supporters of a candidate. Three women were detained on allegations of fraudulent voting in Bhojpuri Colony, leading to a tense situation for a brief period.

In Dhanbad’s Ward 27, scuffles broke out between supporters of two candidates at a polling station, while attempts to loot a booth and an assault involving a candidate’s brother were reported in Ward 22.

A dispute in Ward 18 of Giridih escalated into violence, resulting in stone-pelting and a road blockade as protests erupted. Administrative officials arrived to control the situation. Similarly, a conflict at the Ambedkar Nagar polling station in Gumla turned violent, and voting was disrupted for about an hour in the Jugsalai area of Jamshedpur due to allegations of bogus voting.

In the Hindpiri area of Ranchi, intense fighting occurred between two groups. In Sahibganj, a home guard accidentally discharged a weapon during election duties, causing temporary chaos. Many voters complained that family members’ names were registered at different booths, and some were unaware of changes to their polling stations, leading to confusion.

Two significant issues regarding election management also surfaced. Nearly 50,000 personnel involved in the voting process were unable to cast their votes due to the lack of postal ballot arrangements. Additionally, concerns were raised about the practice of placing ballots for councilor and mayoral positions in the same ballot box, as candidates feared this could prolong the counting process and create confusion.

Despite these challenges, the voting has concluded, and the fates of 562 candidates for mayor and chairperson positions, along with 5,562 ward councilor candidates, now rest in the ballot boxes. All eyes are now on the counting scheduled for February 27.
