Bhopal, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for thunderstorms and rain in several districts of Madhya Pradesh over the next few hours. This alert comes as the state has experienced intermittent rainfall for the past two days.
Forecasts released late Thursday indicate that areas including Chhatarpur (including Khajuraho), Panna, Katni, Singrauli, Sidhi, Anuppur (including Amarkantak), Dindori, Mandla (including Kanha), Balaghat, Chhindwara, Pandhurna (including Pench), Narmadapuram (including Pachmarhi), and Raisen (including Bhimbetka and Sanchi) may see moderate thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rainfall.
The expected intensity of rain in these regions is between 5 to 15 mm per hour, with a 30 to 60 percent chance of lightning strikes.
During the midnight hours, light thunderstorms, lightning, and light rain are predicted in Bhopal (including Bairagarh), Rajgarh, Vidisha, Ashoknagar, Datia, Bhind, Sagar, Tikamgarh, Niwari, Orchha, Damoh, Narsinghpur, Seoni, Jabalpur, Satna, Chitrakoot, Maihar, Rewa, Mauganj, Umaria, and Shahdol. Rainfall in these areas is expected to remain below 5 mm per hour, with a lightning probability of less than 30 percent.
The weather department has cautioned that heavy rainfall could lead to waterlogging, slippery roads, and traffic disruptions, especially in low-lying areas. There is also a risk of damage to weak structures, uprooted trees, and temporary power outages. Farmers are advised that standing crops in some areas may suffer minor to moderate damage.
Residents are urged to remain indoors during storms, avoid seeking shelter under trees or near water bodies, and keep a safe distance from power lines and open fields. Those residing in temporary or unfinished homes should relocate to safer locations. Drivers are advised to exercise caution on wet roads and avoid low-lying areas prone to sudden flooding.
Officials recommend preparing emergency plans, securing loose outdoor items, and keeping an eye on updates from the IMD. People are also advised to stay away from rivers, streams, or reservoirs that may be swollen.
