Ranchi, 25 January – The Government of India has announced the posthumous conferment of the Padma Bhushan award on Shibu Soren, the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and a prominent leader of the Jharkhand statehood movement. His name was included in the list of Padma awardees declared by the Ministry of Home Affairs on the eve of Republic Day. This recognition is seen as a significant national acknowledgement of the tribal community, the Jharkhand movement, and the politics of popular struggle.
Life and Legacy of Shibu Soren
Shibu Soren passed away on 4 August last year in New Delhi during treatment. Born on 11 April 1944 in Nemra village of Gola block, Ramgarh district (then part of Bihar), his life was marked by struggle, rebellion, and social consciousness. At the age of 12, he witnessed the murder of his father, Sobran Manjhi, by usurious moneylenders, which shaped his future path.
As a young boy, Shibu Soren vowed not only to avenge his father’s death but also to free the tribal community from exploitation by moneylenders. He fought a prolonged legal battle amid severe hardships faced by his family. This struggle led him to organise the tribal population against exploitation. He campaigned extensively in villages across Dhanbad, Hazaribagh, and Giridih, sometimes leading movements that turned violent.
Leadership in Tribal Movements and Political Journey
Shibu Soren and his followers were known to carry bows and arrows as symbols of resistance. He led the ‘Dhan Kato Andolan’ (paddy harvesting movement), where tribal women worked in fields while men kept watch. His activism challenged the administration, resulting in multiple imprisonments and periods spent underground. He spent time in the forests of Parasnath and Tundi, and during this period, he founded the ‘Sonot Santal’ organisation to unite tribal consciousness.
The Santali community honoured him with the title ‘Dishom Guru’, meaning ‘leader of the nation’. On 4 February 1972, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) was formed in Dhanbad by merging his ‘Sonot Santal’ with Vinod Bihari Mahto’s ‘Shivaji Samaj’. Shibu Soren became the General Secretary and Mahto the president. The JMM quickly established a strong base in tribal areas of Jharkhand, Odisha, and Bengal.
He was first elected as a Member of Parliament from Dumka in 1980. Following the death of Vinod Bihari Mahto in 1991, Soren became the central president of JMM, becoming the symbol of the party. Under his leadership, the Jharkhand statehood movement reached its decisive phase, culminating in the formation of Jharkhand in 2000. He served as Jharkhand’s Chief Minister three times (2005, 2008, 2009) and was also a Union Minister twice.
Recognition and Tribute
In August 2025, the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a proposal recommending the Bharat Ratna award for Shibu Soren following his demise. The posthumous Padma Bhushan honour is now being viewed as a tribute by the nation to his life of struggle, his dedication to tribal awakening, and his pivotal role in the Jharkhand movement.
