Nagoya, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh has made headlines at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya by winning his second silver medal. After securing the second position in the 10,000 meters race on September 25, he continued his impressive performance in the men’s 1500 meters on Monday.
Hailing from the village of Atrauli in Uttar Pradesh, Gulveer finished the 1500 meters with a personal best time of 3:36.72. He narrowly missed the gold, which went to Japan’s Kazuto Ijawa, who set a new Asian Games record with a time of 3:36.35. Ijawa finished just 0.37 seconds ahead of Gulveer, while fellow Japanese athlete Nagia Mori took the bronze with a time of 3:37.92.
This latest achievement marks Gulveer’s third medal at the Asian Games. Previously, he won a silver medal in the 10,000 meters final, and he also clinched a bronze in the same event at the 2023 Hangzhou Games. By winning two medals in the men’s 10,000 meters at the Asian Games, Gulveer has etched his name in the annals of Indian athletics.
In other events, Avinash Sable fell short in the men’s 3000 meters steeplechase final, finishing in fourth place. He recorded a season-best time of 8:21.67 but was 4.31 seconds behind gold medalist Ryuji Miura from Japan. Ryoma Aoki secured silver with a time of 8:17.60, while Qatar’s Zakariya Elahalami took bronze with a time of 8:18.13.
In the 1500 meters heats, Yunus Shah also qualified for the final, finishing third in his heat. His overall timing was better than Gulveer’s, clocking in at 3:45.77 compared to Gulveer’s 3:45.79. However, in the final, Yunus finished ninth with a time of 3:43.88 despite being in a strong position for much of the race.
