Rome, May 18: Jannik Sinner made history on Sunday by winning the Italian Open title. He became the first Italian player to achieve this feat since Adriano Panatta in 1976. In the final match, Sinner defeated Casper Ruud with a score of 6-4, 6-4, securing his sixth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title.
The championship match lasted 1 hour and 44 minutes. With this victory, Sinner became only the second player in ATP history to complete the career Golden Masters, following Novak Djokovic. Sinner has now won all ATP Masters 1000 titles, a milestone Djokovic achieved after winning in Cincinnati in 2018.
In his on-court interview, Sinner expressed his joy, stating, “I think this is the 50th year since an Italian has won, and I am truly very happy. There was a lot of tension on both sides; our tennis wasn’t perfect, but I am very happy after securing the win. The last two and a half months have been great. I try to put myself in the best position every time and do as well as I can. Every day is not easy, but I am really, really happy.”
With the crowd’s enthusiastic support, Sinner bounced back from a slow start to claim his 10th Masters 1000 title and his first in Rome. Initially, Ruud showcased aggressive play, but Sinner gradually took control of the match. By consistently delivering deep and precise shots from the baseline, he turned the tide in his favor and achieved a memorable victory. After securing the win, the 24-year-old raised his hands in celebration and enjoyed the atmosphere before joining his team courtside to celebrate.
Sinner added, “It was physically more challenging, but I am very happy. I want to thank my team, who has been with me all year, helping me stay fit, as crucial as my tennis coach.”
Ruud praised Sinner’s success this year during the trophy presentation. He said, “I must congratulate Jannik on his first title here. It’s hard to put into words what you are doing this year. For someone playing at the highest level, it’s difficult to grasp what you are achieving.” He continued, “It’s an honor to share the court with you in this beautiful arena for your home Masters 1000. Congratulations on making history for your country and your team. It’s wonderful to see.”
