Jamia Vice Chancellor Leads International Yoga Day Celebration

New Delhi, June 21: Professor Mazhar Asif, Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), led the university’s celebration of the 12th International Yoga Day (IDY) 2026 at the Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi Sports Complex on Sunday. An official confirmed the event’s details.

Participants engaged in the nationwide celebration by watching a live broadcast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address on a large screen at the venue.

Inspired by the Prime Minister’s motivational message, Professor Asif conducted a yoga session for the university students on the theme “Yoga for Healthy Aging.”

The statement emphasized that Professor Asif highlighted the holistic philosophy of yoga and its relevance in contemporary life. He pointed out that three essential elements—diet, sleep, and behavior—are crucial for good health and form the core of yoga practice.

He further explained that yoga teaches us not only to nurture our mind and body but also to manage our emotions, particularly anger and other negative feelings.

The event was organized by JMI’s Department of Sports and Physical Education in collaboration with the Office of the Dean of Student Welfare.

Over 600 faculty members, teaching and non-teaching staff, NSS and NCC volunteers, officials, students, and community members gathered for the occasion.

Alongside Vice Chancellor Professor Asif were the Chairperson of the Sports Committee Mohammad Mahfoozul Haq, Director of Sports and Physical Education Nafees Ahmed, Deputy Director Mohammad Abid, Chief Inspector Mohammad Asad Malik, CIE Director Rihan Khan Soori, and various Deans.

In accordance with the protocols set by the Government of India’s Ministry of AYUSH, participants practiced yoga under the guidance of yoga instructor Professor Badarul Islam Kairanvi. Professor Kairanvi is the Director of the Dr. B.K. Yoga Institute and AYUSH Paramedics Clinic in New Delhi, and a former training commissioner of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, KVS BSG.

Kairanvi demonstrated various postures and asanas aligned with the IDY 2026 theme “Yoga for Healthy Aging.” He emphasized the importance of yoga in treating lifestyle-related diseases, enhancing flexibility, maintaining healthy joint movement, and ensuring disease-free internal organs.

The Prime Minister’s message was echoed by the yoga instructor, who also provided insights into the therapeutic benefits of the various postures being practiced.
