Jaishankar Meets Ukrainian Counterpart Amid Ongoing Middle East Crisis

Paris, March 27: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha on Friday during the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in France. The two ministers discussed the situation in the Middle East, the importance of regional stability, and the secure operation of global supply chains. They also reaffirmed their mutual interest in strengthening bilateral relations.

Following the meeting, Sybiha took to social media platform ‘X’ to express, “There was a meaningful exchange of ideas with my Indian counterpart Dr. S. Jaishankar during the G7 ministerial meeting in France. We discussed the situation in the Middle East, the significance of regional stability, and the secure operation of major global supply chains.”

He added, “We coordinated further contacts and confirmed our mutual interest in enhancing bilateral cooperation.”

This meeting comes amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, which escalated after attacks on Iran by Israel and the United States on February 28. These strikes resulted in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top military officials.

In retaliation, Iran has launched drone and missile attacks targeting U.S. and Israeli positions, regional capitals, and allied forces in the Middle East.

Minister Jaishankar is on a two-day official visit to France to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting.

During a session on improving global governance, Jaishankar emphasized the need for reforming the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), streamlining peacekeeping operations, and strengthening humanitarian supply chains.

He wrote on social media platform ‘X’, “Participated in a session on global governance reform with invited partners at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting. Highlighted the urgent need for UNSC reform, simplification of peacekeeping missions, and strengthening humanitarian supply chains, while specifically addressing energy challenges, fertilizer supply, and food security concerns in the Global South.”

In a subsequent session, Jaishankar also shared his thoughts on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). He noted that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East underscores the increasing need for robust trade routes and secure supply chains.

He stated, “Shared my views on IMEC during the second session of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting. The uncertainties arising from the conflict in the Middle East further clarify the need for stronger trade corridors and supply chains.”

He added, “India’s free trade agreements with the European Union, EFTA member countries, and the UK have enhanced the utility of IMEC. The broad support and enthusiasm for realizing this crucial connectivity initiative are commendable.”
